American Foundations? Part 4

As we prepare to celebrate the 4th of July never forget that prior to the colonies overthrowing the unjust rule of the British Empire, their desire was to live a peaceful, self-governed, Christ-centered life. When it was clear that this would be impossible under the ever increasing, heavy-handed domination of King George lll, the Declaration of Independence was composed.

It was not an act of defiance to authority. Rather, it was the only response that was appropriate for God-fearing men to take against a tyrannical form of governmental rule. That rule was set upon over-powering, controlling and If need be, withholding those basic rights and freedoms that the Creator had given to all. Thus the following lines opened our Declaration:

IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,:

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, …”

The clear Christian influence seen in these opening lines of our most important founding document is unmistakable. In like fashion, so is the unmistakable need to alter or if need be, abolish any form of government, including our own, that becomes destructive to the rights God has given the citizens. Unless we accept the Divine origin of those rights and the Devine mandate to secure them for ourselves and the generations to come, we will become slaves to the laws and leaders who make them.

Any nation that refuses to embrace God as the source of their laws, liberties and leadership will inevitably become enslaved by the rules, regulations and restrictions of unjust and ungodly men who make them. The first has brought domestic tranquility, prosperity and freedom of religion within the context of biblical family life. The second has produced civil unrest, dependence on governmental handouts and bondage that comes without the Christian religion, and this is what has brought our nation to the tipping-point of destruction it is now facing. The question we must now ask is, do we as a nation want to continue into certain self-destruction, or will we return to our Christian roots and be restored?
